Deuteronomic phraseology—adapted by Ralph W. Klein from Moshe Weinfeld

I. Versus idolatry

follow after, worship, serve "other gods."

worship, bow down, burn incense to sun, moon, stars, whole host of heaven burn incense or pour libations to other gods.  Also: "abominations, detestable things, idols."

II Centralization of cult

the place Yahweh will choose to make his name dwell there, sacrifice or burn incense at high places.

III.             Exodus, covenant, election:

ransom from the house of slaves, to establish as a people for himself, treasured people, holy people, people of his inheritance, to love or cleave to the patriarchs/Israel. strong hand--outstretched arm.

IV.              Monotheistic creed.

You shall know that Yahweh alone is God. the great. mighty, and awesome God. There is no other. You made heaven and earth.

V.                 Observance of law and loyalty to covenant

fo1low after. Serve, fear Yahweh to love Yahweh, to cleave to him to walk in all his ways.  To walk in the law of Yahweh. with all the heart and all the soul. To  return to Yahweh with all the heart, to do what is right in Yahweh's eyes.  To keep the commandments, statutes, and testimonies. to keep what is written in this Torah, hearken to Yahweh's voice. statutes and judgments or commandments  to transgress the covenant, for vex Yahweh. to stiffen the neck to frustrate covenant.

VI.              Inheritance of land:

which Yahweh is giving you as an inheritance. to possess the land.  The good land.  No man shall stand before you.

VII.           Retribution

 to prolong days.  Life.  So that it may be well with you.  To destroy, uproot, perish from the face of the land.

VIII. Fulfillment of Prophecy.

to establish the word of Yahweh. to fulfill word of Yahweh. my servants the prophets.

VIII.        Parenetic phraseology. 

Hear, 0 Israel, you shall exterminate the evil from your midst, care for the stranger, orphan, and widow. which I command you this day.  To lay it to heart. from one end of the earth to the other. the great and terrible desert.  "who keeps the gracious covenant."   life, so that it may be well with you.
